WEEKEND EVENTS *********
TOOTH OF CRIME by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Sam Shepard
7:30pm, Jan. 28,
29, SCC Theater
NEW INFO ABOUT PRODUCTION:
This production, co-directed by Jesse Ross and Tony Doupé, is a
collaboration between SCC art, drama and music students. At Doupé's
inquiry, art instructors Natalie Niblack and Laura Ward asked design
students if they would be interested in creating stage sets for the
play. Student Maya Huggins, who jumped on the opportunity to spearhead
the project, developed ideas for stage design and brought 10 other art
students on board to help paint the set. Music students perform
live rock 'n' roll as well. More than 50 students, faculty and
staff worked for months preparing for the future-oriented production.
John Nold was in charge of set construction and set design.
Set
in a music-driven American wasteland, Shepard’s melodrama relates the
alternating self-doubt and drug-fuelled hubris o f the of the aging rock
warlord Hoss as he searches for relevance and attempts to protect his
turf from the upstart “Gypsy” rocker, Crow. Living in fortressed
isolation and waited on by a handful of leather-clad lackeys, Hoss
struggles to regain his originality and emerge from the fetid “river of
sameness” that rock was quickly becoming. Backed by the electric crackle
of a 500-watt amplifier and the percussive beat of a snare drum,
The Tooth of Crime
is,
ultimately, a play that
explores the nature of personal and artistic integrity, and the power
that can come from picking up a microphone and unleashing a primal howl
into the air. There is a live rock/punk band on stage and the story
rocks.

EMPLOYEE
CLIMATE SURVEY -COMING SOON!
Open from 6am, Mon,
January 30 to 12pm, Mon, February 13
All, After a lapse of a few years, the college is reintroducing the
Employee Climate Survey (you can't keep a good survey down!). The
questions are largely based on the WA State Employee Survey which can be
found at (The Washington State Department of Personnel web site appears
to be having technical problems so access is not currently available.
Please keep checking at:
http://www.dop.wa.gov/WorkforceDataAndPlanning/WorkforceDataTrend
StateEmployeeSurvey/Pages/default.aspx
The intent of
the survey is best summed up on the above website: Agencies act on their
Employee Survey data to:
*Improve
workforce management practices
* Improve workplace culture
* Celebrate what's being done well
* Help retain and engage a productive workforce
As you know,
the college is being subjected to serious influences; the expectation is
that these results will serve (at least in part) to suggest avenues that
will help us navigate through the upcoming/ongoing stresses. As such, we
would like to encourage your participation in the survey when it opens
at 6 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2012. The survey will remain open until
noon on Monday, February 13, 2012. Assuming sufficient reponses in each
category to assure confidentiality, response averages overall and by
Employee group (Classified, Exempt, Faculty, Hourly, Student) for each
question will be posted on the IR (Institutional Research)website by the
close of the day on Friday February 17.

SPECIAL NOTIFICATION
REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER
NOTIFICATION
Shoreline Community College (SCC) is dedicated to
providing timely and appropriate notification of
registered sexual offenders present on the campus. The
purpose of the notification is to inform the community
of Registered Sex Offenders currently enrolled at SCC.
In Washington, sex offenders are
categorized as Level I (low risk to re-offend), Level II
(moderate risk to re-offend) and Level III (high risk to
re-offend). In accordance with Washington State law and
Shoreline Community College's policy (Administrative
Policy: Notification of Registered Sexual Offender(s))
notification is provided to the general campus of Level
II and Level III sex offenders.
This quarter SCC has one (1) Level II
Sex Offender and two (2) Level III Sex Offenders present
on the campus (Please note that Level I Sex Offenders do
not require public notification). Flyers will be posted
in public locations across the campus with appropriate
information about the Level III individuals.
The King County Sheriff's Office
advises the following: Experts believe sex offenders are
less likely to re-offend if they live and work in an
environment free of harassment. Any actions taken
against the individuals named in the notification,
including vandalism of property, verbal or written
threats of harm; or physical violence against this
person, his or her family, or employer, will result in
arrest and persecution of criminal acts. It is against
the law (RCW 9A.44.130) to use this information in any
way to threaten, intimidate, or harass registered
offenders. Notifications are intended as information
items only and there is no additional action required
nor is this intended to create excessive anxiety among
students and employees.

The
Other Half: Displays of Wealth in a Recession and Double-Take:
Photographs by Mateo Zapata Zachai
Howard Hsu and Mateo Zachai are photography instructors at Shoreline.
The Other Half is Howard’s look behind the closed-door gatherings of
wealth, or perceived wealth, in America. The photographs were taken as
rumors of an impending recession quickly became reality. The project
explores ostentatious attire, unconventional gestures, and objects of
gratification.
Mateo’s Double-Take is a series of deconstructed photographs created by
punching holes in negatives and reconstructing them in the darkroom. The
rows of disaggregated photographic circles are inspired by
Lichtenstein’s Ben-Day Dots and Chuck Close’s cell-grid portraits.
